The Importance of Immunisation Records for Children

Ensuring your child is immunised is a crucial step in protecting them from preventable diseases. Keeping an accurate immunisation record is just as important—it helps childcare providers, schools, and health professionals ensure your child is up to date with their vaccinations and meets legal requirements.

Why Immunisation Records Matter

  • Health & Safety: Immunisations protect children from serious illnesses such as measles, whooping cough, and polio.
  • Legal & Childcare Requirements: In Australia, proof of immunisation is required for childcare enrolment and certain government benefits.
  • Emergency Medical Care: If a child falls ill, an up-to-date record helps doctors provide the right care quickly.

Steps to Obtain & Maintain Immunisation Records

  • Check Your Child’s Immunisation Status
    • If your child has been vaccinated, their immunisation records should be available through the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).
  • Access the Record
    • You can get a copy of your child’s immunisation history statement through:
    • Medicare online (via MyGov)
    • The Express Plus Medicare mobile app
    • Requesting a hard copy from Services Australia
  • Provide the Record to Childcare
    • Most childcare centres require a copy of the immunisation statement before enrolment. Be sure to submit it promptly.
  • Keep Records Updated
    • Each time your child receives a vaccination, their record will be updated in AIR automatically. However, it’s a good practice to keep a personal copy.
  • Catch-Up Immunisations
    • If your child has missed any vaccinations, consult your doctor to arrange a catch-up schedule.

By staying on top of your child’s immunisation record, you ensure their well-being, make childcare enrolment easier, and help protect the wider community from outbreaks of disease.
